General Description

Collaborative optimization is a new design architecture developed for application to large-scale, complex, multidisciplinary systems. The design framework is particulary suited for problems in which the degree of interdisciplinary coupling is relatively small and the number of discipline-specific constraints or variables is large. In this approach, a complex problem is hierarchically decomposed along disciplinary or other user-specified boundaries into a number of subproblems which are brought into multidisciplinary agreement by a system-level coordination process. Numerous problems have been solved with this architecture ranging from analytic problems like Rosenbrock's valley function, to aircraft and launch vehicle design or trajectory problems. The architecture has been developed by members of the Aircraft Design Group at Stanford University under the guidance of Professor Ilan Kroo.
